High Voltage Oil Transformers

High voltage oil transformers are designed to handle the heat cause by high voltage. The oil in the transformers is primarily used to cool the transformers, and helps to reduce corona discharge within high voltage transformers. The oil used in these transformers are usually highly-refined mineral oil and cellulose paper, which can handle high temperatures and has excellent electrical insulating properties. High voltage or very large power transformers with capacities of millions of watts may have cooling fans, oil pumps and even oil to water heat exchangers. The high voltage oil transformers, has to be completely free of water vapor before the oil is introduced. This prevents electrical breakdown under load. This requires prolonged drying processes use electrical self-heating, or the application of a vacuum.

Design of a High Voltage Oil Transformers

Transformers are made with a grain oriented silicone steel core surrounded by the primary and secondary windings and are typically made of copper. The current flow through the primary winding induces a magnetic flux in the transformer core, that in turn induces a voltage on the secondary winding. The voltage is determined by the number of coils or turns in the primary winding vs the number of turns in the secondary windings. Transformers can be used to step up voltages or step down voltages. All transformers, regardless of type operate on the same principle.

High voltage oil transformers are construction the same except that the core and coil assembly is placed in a tank and the tank is filled with high dielectric cooling oil. The primary insulation system in a high voltage oil transformer is usually Kraft paper, wood, porcelain and oil. Many units use paper that is chemically treated to improve it strength properties and resistance to decay caused by immersion in oil. The main function of the oil is to transfer heat from the core and coils to the external radiator banks where the heat is then distributed to the surround air. Connections to the coil are made through bushings that are typically made from epoxy or porcelain. On high voltage oil transformers, it is usually porcelain. Silicone oils are sometimes used in oil filled transformers because of their greater flash points, and allows the high voltage oil transformer to be installed in areas where fire is a concern.

Maintenance of High Voltage Oil Transformers

All transformers fail usually in the same way. A failure occurs when the insulation systems is so badly compromised that it no longer acts as an insulator to the high voltage that it contains. The key to extending the life of your high voltage oil transformer is to keep the insulation in good condition. The main cause of of insulation breakdown are:

Voltage spikes or transients
Moisture
Heat
Dirt
Insulating oil decay

In an oil filled transformer the single greatest cause for power transformer to fail is the decay of the oil. Over the course of the high voltage oil transformer use, it is exposed to high temperatures, oxygen and water. This interaction with the steel of the tank and the core and copper or aluminum windings will eventually cause the chemical properties of the oil to deteriorate. This process is known as oxidation. As the oil oxidized it will form fatty acid compounds that settle out of suspension in the oil and rest on the coils, coil cooling ducts, radiator fins and tank floor. Eventually, this will impede the cooling capabilities of the oil and its ability to circulate through the core and coils is reduced, and therefore no longer transfer the heat away from them. Since the internal workings of an oil filled transformer are not exposed for easy inspection the warning signs and symptoms are harder to detect. Regular maintenance should be done to your transformers and checking the oil on your older transformers is important.
