Transformer Oil Cooler

The transformer oil cooler plays a key role in keeping our power system reliable.  The transformer oil cooler protects the massive transformers that make up the backbone of our nation's energy supply. The heat these massive transformers produced must be carried away and dissipated, if not the transformer will overheat and can even damage or destroy these transformers. The windings of these transformers are immersed in an enhanced mineral oil and is circulated to cool the transformer.  The oil cooled transformers remains stable even at high temperatures and has excellent insulating properties that also protect against a stray current path. The heat lost is then transferred either to the ambient air around the transformer or to water.  Larger transformers may use forced oil circulation by electric pumps, and assisted by external fans or water-cooled heat exchangers.

The transformer oil cooler has to be the right sized to transfer the amount of heat that needs to protect the transformer.  In many cases, the manufacturing of an oil immersed transformers take into effect the kind of harsh environment that is going to be around the transformer to make sure it provides adequate cooling.

Transformer Oil Cooler types

In transformer oil cooler the air-cooled systems are the most prevalent because it is readily available and has fewer environmental concerns.  There are many factors to take in considerations with the air-cooled systems. The difference temperature between the air and the oil determines the amount of surface needed for cooling.  The greater the temperature different between the oil and air, the less surface is needed.  Air-cooled transformers oil coolers are usually mounted on the side of the transformer, about 3 feet away from the transformer wall.  The transformer oil coolers takes air from around the transformers, and utilize fans that draw or push the air through the transformer coolers.  Depending upon how many transformer oil coolers are need and how much heat has to be dissipated, one to six coolers might be place along side the transformer.

There are several other factors that should be taken into account which may affect the transformer oil cooler performance:

  • Buildings around the transformers, or firewalls components can trap air and hold back air exhaust.

  • Existing transformers cooling applications could blow heated air toward the new installation

  • Wind speed and direction can also be a factor.  If the fans are blowing air away from the transformer but the prevailing wind is blowing towards the transformer, the warmed air will be pushed back. 

Another type of transformer oil cooler is the water-cooled systems.  This system is very efficient, and used where water is readily available.  After the heat of the transformer is dissipated to the water, it has to be either discharged back to its source or lower the water temperature before recirculating through the transformer cooler.  This system also has to have a leak detector system to make sure water doesn't get into the oil cooled transformer, which could have devastating consequences.  Applications of the water cooler systems would be hydro power applications.
