Transformer Oil Dielectric Strength

The transformer oil dielectric strength is very important in the function of the transformer.  Any significant reduction in the transformer oil dielectric strength may indicate that the oil is no longer capable of performing its vital function.  The function of the transformer oils is to provide electrical insulation and coolant for the transformer.  If the transformer oil dielectric strength is low, it can cause overheating of the transformer and possible failure.  The dielectric strength is defined as the maximum voltage that can be applied across the fluid without electrical breakdown.  Some of the reason the transformer oil dielectric strength may be reduced is water, oil degradation byproducts and cellulose paper breakdown.

Maintenance of a transformer should  be the testing of the transformer oil dielectric strength.  If the dielectric strength is low in the oil filled transformer, the oil is unfit to use regardless of any other condition.  The transformer oil dielectric strength must have 60 kV withstand voltage between two brass electrodes - 12.7 to 13 mm dia, arranged horizontally with their common axis not less than 40 mm above the bottom of the cell, with a gap of 2.5 mm.  The testing of the transformer oil dielectric strength is the most popular test on transformers, but there no single test that judges the quality of transformer oil.  Each test is significant but is only able to give only general information about the overall condition of the oil.

The oil filled transformers are most commonly used in our electric power distribution, and an oil cooled transformer is extremely reliable, but failures do occur.  Properly maintained transformer are a must to maximize their life expectancy, and transformers are too expensive to replace regularly.  With the testing of the transformer oil dielectric strength, it can give the operators fair warning that a transformer is in trouble and gives them the options of replacing it or changing it oil.  By monitoring the transformer oil dielectric strength condition, suddenly occurring faults can be discovered in time and outages can be avoided.  Not only routine oil analysis but the operation of the gas relays, the operation of on-load tap-changer, and checks for oil leaks.  The oil paper insulating system breakdown is one of the most crucial elements, and these can be detected by routine oil analysis. 

Transformer Oil dielectric Strength  - Deterioration of a Transformer

There are many factors that can cause the transformer to deteriorate.  By measuring the physical and chemical properties of oil, and certain dissolved gases, problem conditions with either the oil or the transformer can be determined.  The below list is some of the common tests performed on a transformer.

Moisture content:  Any increase in moisture content can reduce the insulating properties of the oil.  This is importance with fluctuating temperatures because as the transformer cools down, any dissolved water will become free, resulting in poor insulating power and fluid degradation.  Also excessive moisture content will also breakdown the paper insulation resulting in loss of performance.

Acid Number:  Transformer oil can oxidized under the influence of excessive temperature and oxygen.  This oxidization can results in the presence of small metal particles resulting in an increase in the acid number, due to the formation of carboxylic acids.  These particles can result in sludge and varnish deposits, and block the oil canals and doesn't provide the sufficient amount of coolant for the transformer.

Dielectric Strength:  The oil in the transformer deteriorates and is the main cause of transformer failure.  By  monitoring the oil  and the transformer oil dielectric strength it gives a clearer picture on how the transformer is performing and if any problems exist.  

Power Factor:  The power factor of an insulating oil is the ratio of true power to apparent power.  A high power factor is an indication of significant power loss in the insulating oil.  This can be caused by such things as polar contaminants, such as water, oxidized oil and cellulose paper degradation.

Dissolved Gas Analysis (DGA) - This test determines the concentrations of certain gases in the oil such as oxygen, nitrogen, carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, hydrogen, methane, ethane, ethylene and acetylene.  This can help diagnose certain operational problems with the transformer, which may not be associated with a change in the property of  the insulating oil.  High levels of carbon monoxide may indicate a thermal breakdown of cellulose paper, while high hydrogen with methane may indicate a corona discharge within the transformer. 

Furans - Furan testing measure the degradation of cellulose paper,  As the paper ages, it degree of polymerization reduces, so its mechanical strength decreases.  Furan derivates are formed as a direct result of the breakdown of the polymeric structure of cellulose paper.
