Transformer Oil Weight

In an oil filled transformer the type of transformer oil weight is determined by what application or what voltage of the transformer.  In most cases the higher the voltage of a transformer the lighter weight of the transformer oil.  The reason for this it provides a better coolant that the heavy weight oil.  The most popular type of oil used in oil filled transformer is a highly refined mineral oil that is stable at high temperatures and has excellent insulating properties.  Many of these oil cooled transformers use a stable silicone base or fluorinated hydrocarbons, which are more fire-resistant than the mineral oil.

Transformer Oil Weight - How the Oil Works in a Transformer

The main function of the oil is a coolant for the transformer, and its insulates and suppresses corona and arching.  The oil in the transformer helps cool the transformers.  Oil filled transformers are generally used in high voltage transformers and used in our electrically power distribution.  They are extremely efficient, and provide years of trouble free service, on the average an oil immersed transformer can last for 35 years or more. They are  less expense than the dry type transformers, but because of  flammability, they are usually restricted to outdoor installations.

The core and windings of the transformer are immersed in the oil.  When the transformers are engaged the winding heat up, and this in turn heats the oil.  The tank of the transformer is cooled by air or radiators and in some cases fans and pumps are used.  The hot oil moves away from the core to the cooler tank sides, this starts the oil circulating, and as it moves to the side it cools down and then returns to the centre and gets heated up again. 

As the transformer load increases so does the winding temperature.  This means the oil has to dissipate more heat.  Eventually, the capacity of the oil to dissipate the heat quickly enough will be reached, if the temperature is reached before the transformer is fully load it will cause overheating and damage to the transformer.  You could increase the size of the tank, but this means a very large piece of equipment.  On these large voltage transformers cooling banks or radiators are installed.  Generally, they are separate from the transformer and connected to it by a flow and return pipe.  The flow to pipe is high and near the top of the transformer and the return is near the bottom.  A pump is then used to circulate the oil and is temperature controlled. These pumps only come on when the oil has reached a certain temperature.

If the transformer still needs more cooling fans are added.  They are usually positioned under the cooling banks and when switched on forces air over the cooling banks.  The air produced by the fans takes the heat away faster, and therefore cools the oil quicker.  The pumps then return it to the main tank where it is heated by the core and windings again.   Most oil filled transformers are designed for their applications and the environment they are going to be used in and careful consideration needs to be taken as what type of transformer oil weight is going to be used.  What type of oil should be used if mineral oil or silicone base would be best for the application, and if any extra cooling equipment needs to be installed on the transformer.
